ASSEMBLY LINE

Have you ever fantasized about how far you could take a project, if only you had a team of engaged and competent artists to lend a hand for a few hours? EFA Project Space announces Assembly Line, a bi-weekly workshop that matches artists with a group of willing production assistants.

The tradeoff? Each artist whose project is selected for a workshop will be required to participate as assistants on two additional evenings. Those interested in helping are not required to apply with a project—the only requirement is enthusiasm, and the desire to create.

Projects are selected based on how clearly they would benefit from group assistance in addition to being an enriching endeavor for the group of peer helpers. Assembly Line projects are essentially  something we can all easily sink our teeth into, learn from, and get excited about.

In addition to the benefits of increased productivity, participating artists  gain exposure to diverse practices and an expanding and changing group of peers. -more-

Assembly Line Updates and Announcements

Assembly Line with Jing Yu

We are thrilled to announce that Assembly Line is headed into it's 5th month and is still going strong!

Teams of volunteer assistants have come together to help artists complete significant portions of larger projects of diverse media and concepts. So far, we have learned how to crochet plastic, cast porcelain, build shelters, draw words, and more.

The series kicked off as we built Hexayurts with Carla Aspenburg and cut out and gathered fabric components for a public sculpture with Anne Percoco (as described in the previous Assembly Line post below).

In July, we participated in an experiment developed especially for Assembly Line with artist Michael Winkler, making abstract forms created by the spelling of words- a process he has been exploring for over 25 years. We also formed a true "assembly line" as we produced a series of cast porcelain souvenir plates with Tess Catalano. Step by step down the line we collectively hand-made over 20 plates to be used in a series exploring how places are identified through souvenir kitsch.

Next, we became part of Jing Yu's production team for her imaginary record label, Bunnycorpse records and helped stuff 50 hand printed record sleeves with the new Jeanette's release. Finally, in September we helped visual artist Olek and Lynn Neuman of the Artichoke Dance Company crochet discarded plastic six-pack rings into costumes for a series of site specific performances in NYC calling to attention coastal cleanup.

Assembly Line kicks off in June with Hexayurts and a soft sculpture/public art project you can climb into!

The first two sessions of Assembly line on June 16th and 30th were productive, fun, and provided participants with an inside perspective of two local artists practices and production techniques. The artists each led the teams in producing portions of one of their current projects, gaining some much needed assistance and the opportunity to intimately share their work with the group.

On June 16th the team worked with artist Carla Aspenberg to manufacture three different open source dwelling structures called hexayurts. Aspenberg was interested in exploring these affordable structures, often used as affordable emergency response shelters, as components of a future installation. The Assembly Line stepped in to provide the extra hands and space she needed to construct them and everyone left knowing how to build a hexayurt!

For the June 30th workshop we assisted artist Anne Percoco with a soft sculpture she is creating for the Dumbo Arts Center Art Under the Bridge festival in the Fall. Anne is sewing an intricate sleeping bag from thousands of fabric leaves extracted from scrap and reclaimed fabric. The Assembly Line team was able to gather and cut out hundreds of leaves of all colors, shapes, piled high on the communal table by the end of the session and easily saving the artist a week's worth of labor!
