Assembly Line kicks off in June with Hexayurts and a soft sculpture/public art project you can climb into!

The first two sessions of Assembly line on June 16th and 30th were productive, fun, and provided participants with an inside perspective of two local artists practices and production techniques. The artists each led the teams in producing portions of one of their current projects, gaining some much needed assistance and the opportunity to intimately share their work with the group.

On June 16th the team worked with artist Carla Aspenberg to manufacture three different open source dwelling structures called hexayurts. Aspenberg was interested in exploring these affordable structures, often used as affordable emergency response shelters, as components of a future installation. The Assembly Line stepped in to provide the extra hands and space she needed to construct them and everyone left knowing how to build a hexayurt!

For the June 30th workshop we assisted artist Anne Percoco with a soft sculpture she is creating for the Dumbo Arts Center Art Under the Bridge festival in the Fall. Anne is sewing an intricate sleeping bag from thousands of fabric leaves extracted from scrap and reclaimed fabric. The Assembly Line team was able to gather and cut out hundreds of leaves of all colors, shapes, piled high on the communal table by the end of the session and easily saving the artist a week's worth of labor!

Images coming soon.
