Assembly Line Updates and Announcements
Assembly Line with Jing Yu
We are thrilled to announce that Assembly Line is headed into it's 5th month and is still going strong!
Teams of volunteer assistants have come together to help artists complete significant portions of larger projects of diverse media and concepts. So far, we have learned how to crochet plastic, cast porcelain, build shelters, draw words, and more.
The series kicked off as we built Hexayurts with Carla Aspenburg and cut out and gathered fabric components for a public sculpture with Anne Percoco (as described in the previous Assembly Line post below).
In July, we participated in an experiment developed especially for Assembly Line with artist Michael Winkler, making abstract forms created by the spelling of words- a process he has been exploring for over 25 years. We also formed a true "assembly line" as we produced a series of cast porcelain souvenir plates with Tess Catalano. Step by step down the line we collectively hand-made over 20 plates to be used in a series exploring how places are identified through souvenir kitsch.
Next, we became part of Jing Yu's production team for her imaginary record label, Bunnycorpse records and helped stuff 50 hand printed record sleeves with the new Jeanette's release. Finally, in September we helped visual artist Olek and Lynn Neuman of the Artichoke Dance Company crochet discarded plastic six-pack rings into costumes for a series of site specific performances in NYC calling to attention coastal cleanup.
