Resident Spotlight 2012: Jamie Kim

Jamie Kim is a figurative painter who draws from both personal and collective cultural sources to weave fictional narratives that feel real and familiar. When not working in the studio, Jamie works as the Manager of Public Programs in the Education Department of the Children's Museum of Manhattan.
PS: What are you working on now?
JK: I was immediately inspired by my studio space and felt that I had to work BIG. I stretched some old fabric that has been sitting around and I plan on incorporating some gold line work based on illuminated manuscripts, Buddhist sutras and seventeenth century lace patterns.
PS: What is your experience so far?
JK: Its been a little challenging getting used to a "community" workspace, since I have been working privately for years now. There are benefits of working in a community environment, however, since you get motivated by the energy/ideas/presence of the others. I have noticed some obvious similarities in the work of myself and a few others and we plan on allowing intersection. The other residents are so unique and we have such different art styles- it will be fun to see what happens in the next few weeks!
PS: Early morning bird or night owl?
JK: Early bird
