Resident Spotlight 2011: Roddy Schrock

Roddy was born in Aberdeen Mississippi and is now the Associate Director: Creative Residencies at Eyebeam Art + Technology Center
We have already told you about the resident's professional lives here, so we decided to get a little more personal. To learn a little more about them in and outside of the studio we have asked our residents to respond to questions on topics from art to late night snacking. Here are Roddy's answers to our probing questions...
Preferred mode of transportation: taxi, bike, subway, foot?
Hands down, biking. Biking around New York is simultaneously a form of therapy and a shot of adrenaline.
If you couldn’t work in the arts/be an artist, what kind of work would you do?
Probably a farmer.
If a celebrity were to play you in a movie who would it be?
Dominic Cooper.
Are you a morning or evening person?
Mornings are such a sexy time of day, everything is just starting, you made it through another night of sleep. I wish I could see more daybreaks.
What are your creative inspirations?
Good conversations with friends and collaborators. Recently I've found planningtorock's approach very fresh and interesting, especially the way she plays with gender roles in her voice and costumes. And French electronic musician Anne Laplantine has been an ongoing source of inspiration.
What are you working on now?
I’m building a composition for sound installation from the yelps, squeals, sighs, screams, huffs, and other non-verbal eruptions from Goldie Hawn in 1990’s “Bird On A Wire”. So far, I’ve sampled 62 of them, and this is merely representative, not comprehensive. I’ve been listening to the whole movie (without video), pulling them out, and digitally manipulating them to build a stand-alone sound piece that will also be installed in a wooden box, that requires people to open it and put their head in to experience it. A kind of GoldieBox.
What’s your favorite late night food?
Fried eggs with chevre over rice, with freshly ground pepper.
