Process and Progress: Impressions from this past year's RAWA artists

Wednesday, July 31st marked the end of the 2012-2013 Arts Workers As Artist Residency at EFA Project Space. Artists, Jonathan Durham, Francis Estrada, Howard Halle, Elizabeth Hamby, Jaime Kim, Naomi Miller, and Sarah Walko shared with the public their conclusions of the year-long residency, paving the way for the next group to begin in early August. 

On the same evening, we announced the 2013- 2014 residents: Sidd Joag, Karen Ostrom, Hatuey Ramos-Fermin, Ellen Uzane Schneiderman, Todd Shalom, Carolyn Sickles and Rachel Vera Steinberg. The new Residency for Arts Workers as Artists began on August 2nd!

Retreat

During the July 5th 2013 weekend, the 2012-2013 residents took a weekend retreat to Tyler Hill House/ Mildred's Lane to reflect on their year long experience as part of the Residency for Arts Workers as Artists.

2012 Residency Open House and Reception

Last Thursday, August 30, EFA Project Space hosted the 3rd annual Residency for Arts Workers as Artists Open House and Reception.  Visitors were invited into the EFA gallery space turned communal studio to walk around the artists work stations, view works in progress, and talk with the residents in a casual and intimate setting. From full out installations to ongoing performances throughout the event, the artists' presented a broad and exciting range of new work completed over the three-week intensive period of the Residency for Arts Workers as Artists . Resident Spotlight 2012: Howard Halle

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For over 35 years, Howard Halle has been involved in the visual arts as an artist, writer, teacher, curator, critic and editor. Additionally, Howard is the chief art critic and Editor-at-Large for Time Out New York.  His artwork has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and Europe.

Now that the 2012 Residents have settled in to their awesome communal studio, we wanted to see if we could get a bit more of a sense of their studio practices, working habits, and their personalities. So, we asked each of them to answer a series of questions ranging from their artistic fantasies to their favorite foods.  Here's what Howard told us...

Elizabeth Hamby is an artist and coordinator of the Neighborhood Explorers Program at the Museum of the City of New York, engaging community members to lead their neighborhoods in becoming cleaner, healthier, and safer living spaces. Her artistic practice also focuses on the dynamic of everyday urban experience through visual and participatory methods.
