Comparison and symbolism are two essential ingredients in Chunwoo Nam's work. Diptychs and triptychs serve to contrast and integrate emotional and intellectual responses to personal encounters. In the series Individual Story, Nam seeks to represent the complexities of identity, estrangement, cultural bias, linguistic barriers, and social pressures in his life's journey. His second and third series, Individual Faces and Individual Spaces, emphasize how Nam has perceived and remembered individuals in his life.

The unlimited range and flexibility of the lithographic printing process allows Nam to convey complex concepts and issues which speak not only about private memories, but Nam's profound love of printmaking - its possibilities, opportunities and challenges. For Nam, printmaking continues to offer up fresh insights in life's unfolding drama.

Chunwoo Nam is a printmaker and educator. He received an MFA from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a BFA from the University of Hong-Ik in Korea and studied at Tamarind Institute of Lithography at Albuquerque in the USA. His prints are included in the permanent collections of numerous museums and universities such as Yale University, Smith College, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum Ueno, Japan, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, and more.

Pull up a chair!  Learn to make a print the back-to-nature way: water-based ink, wood, and printing with your hands.  Master Printer, Kathy Carraccio, is holding a free demonstration on Japanese water-based woodblock printing techniques and will have examples of traditional, antique, and contemporary prints on hand for a Q & A session following the demonstration.  The techniques she will be demonstrating will be covered in greater depth during her upcoming class at RBPMW.  If you have ever had the itch to know how traditional Japanese prints were made come to the demo and scratch a bit more by signing up for the class.  Get a 10% discount on the class for signing up at the demo.

Kathy Caraccio is an alumna of The Printmaking Workshop, Inc., where she trained to be a master printer for four years.  In 1977, Caraccio founded the K. Caraccio Printing Studio in NYC.  She has taught at Columbia University, FIT, Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, and NYU.  Carracio has also been involved in the not-for-profit world, and taught a variety of workshops at Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, Lower East Side Printshop, Dieu Donne Paper Mill, Manhattan Graphics Center, and Women's Studio Workshop.  Toshi Yoshida was Carracio's hanga sensei in Miasa Bunca Art Center in Nagano, Japan.  She is currently a printmaking instructor at the National Academy School of Fine Art, and has participated in numerous group and solo shows both nationally and internationally.

Playing The Game

In the place between expectation and desire, worlds of youth and adulthood collide.  Playing The Game, Daryl Vocat's first solo exhibition in New York City, features a collection of etchings and screen prints exploring masculinity through depictions of ritual, subculture and violence. His work plays with adult notions of identity through a boy’s world of wisdom, witticisms and icons.

Daryl Vocat lives and works in Toronto. He received a BFA from University of Regina in Saskatchewan, and an MFA from York University in Toronto. His main focus as an artist is printmaking.  Vocat works out of Toronto’s Open Studio. www.darylvocat.com
