OPENING NEXT WEEK: RBPMW Fellows: Jarrod Beck, Andrea Cote & Fred Hayes

Images (left to right) by: Jarrod Beck, Andrea Cote & Fred Hayes

August 25 - September 8, 2011
Opening: Thursday, August 25th 2011, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Blackburn 20|20

RBPMW is pleased to announce the opening of RBPMW Fellows: Jarrod Beck, Andrea Cote & Fred Hayes. This is the last of three exhibitions presenting the work of RBPMW's 2009 - 2010 Studio Immersion Project Fellows.

Studio Immersion Project (SIP) Fellowship is an intense workspace project designed to introduce artists from multiple disciplines to printmaking. SIP encourages and supports the technical and conceptual evolution of creative practice for both emerging and experienced artists. Viewed together, the work of Beck, Cote and Hayes is a visual embodiment of RBPMW's SIP Fellowship.

Jarrod Beck pushes the limits of a copperplate - scratching, burnishing and biting into it using etching, aquatint and drypoint. Each of the three intaglio processes marks the plate in a specific way, yet combined in Beck's unique method create mesmerizing webs of line and tone, capturing bold, inky shapes between fine veils of line.

Andrea Cote is exhibiting bright, colorful prints depicting mandala and heart forms. They look cheerful and innocuous from afar. Stepping closer, the viewer sees that each print is comprised of impressions the artist has taken from her own body, adding a visceral and intimate dimension to her work.

Fred Hayes focuses on capturing the human condition within the urban environment, attempting to highlight the face of the marginalized. He uses a loose gestural style to create monoprint portraits that hauntingly stare directly at the viewer, watching us as we watch them.

FREE DEMO TONIGHT!

Foil Printing with Ana Golici

Foil Printing portfolio

Thursday, July 28 2011

6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Please join us for an informal talk and demo on Foil Printing with Ana Golici. Showing works by many artists, including herself, Golici will discuss the various results that can be achieved when foil is combined with digital and traditional printmaking techniques.

The evening will include a special presentation of the "Foil Imaging: The Original Editioned Prints," portfolio, published by Cedar Rapids: WDG Communications, Inc, in 2006, under Virginia Myers' close supervision. Each copy features a set of 22 numbered foil imaging prints, in a limited edition of 50. The portfolio took several years to produce, and it's a labor of love by Virginia and her students, showing amazing new ways of using the foil printing technique in conjunction with other traditional printmaking techniques.

In the second part of the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to experiment the process and play with the new and intriguing Foil Printing technique. Golici is a longtime member and instructor at RBPMW and will teach the exciting new process of Foil Printing at RBPMW in a weekend long class, on August 6th & 7th.

How Foil Printing Began: In 1983 Professor Virginia A. Myers (an American artist and inventor) began researching the use of gold leaf and foil in the printmaking process. During this process she invented the Iowa Foil Press, a device that allows individual artists to incorporate foil stamping into their work. Myers worked in conjunction with community members and students to improve and document the printmaking process of foil stamping using the Iowa Foil Press, and collectively produced a book, "Foil Imaging...A New Art Form." As of 2010, Professor Virginia A. Myers continues to teach printmaking at the University of Iowa printmaking studios, where she and her students are developing and perfecting hot-stamped foil techniques to create both editionable and unique prints.

RBPMW is pleased to announce the opening of RBPMW Fellows: Shervone Neckles & Jill Parisi. This is the first of three exhibitions presenting the work of RBPMW's 2009 - 2010 Studio Immersion Project Fellows.

Included in this exhibition are two ambitious photo-lithographic projects that grew out of the artists' exploration of print techniques during the fellowship. Parisi's imaginary botanical forms take on a large scale in her hand cut installation while Neckles juxtaposes historical and present-day photographs of the 1983 American invasion of Grenada into a panoramic scroll.
