Arts Workers as Artists Retreat at Mildred's Lane

EFA Project Space was pleased to have the opportunity to bring the 2011 Arts Workers as Artists Residents to Mildred's Lane in rural Pennsylvania for their end-of-season retreat. We would like to express our gratitude to interdisciplinary artist, and co-founder, J. Morgan Puett (a model combination of artist and arts worker!), for being the most gracious host at this unique and inspiring mecca for social practice art.

2012 Residency for Arts Workers as Artists

Residency Imgs 2010 + 2011

Now in its 3rd rotation, the Residency for Arts Workers as Artists was launched in August 2010 to provide an unprecedented opportunity: studio space and peer support for practicing artists who also work as arts professionals (administrators, curators, directors, and others). This program honors these individuals' longstanding commitment to supporting fellow artists-- one that necessitates sacrifice of time and flexibility-- with a unique environment to build on their own art practices.

Seven residents are selected from nominations based on their outstanding contributions to the art community plus their potential for artistic growth in a shared interactive environment.

EFA Project Space is pleased to announce the resident line up for the 2012 Residency for Arts Workers as Artists:

Jonathan Durham, Abrons Art Center
Francis Estrada, MoMA (Education Department)
Howard Halle, Time Out New York
Elizabeth Hamby, Museum of the City of New York
Jamie Kim, Children's Museum of Manhattan
Naomi Miller, Artadia
Sarah Walko, Triangle Arts

Congratulations 2012 Residents!

Unnamed Broadway Musical: It was a smash hit!

We are all still beaming from the final performance of Unnamed Broadway Musical: The Musical! We laughed, we cried, our spirits soared as the cast danced and sang, and never forgot a line. They were fantastic. Click here to see the final performance slideshow, and click here to see the beautiful Tumblr, including the playbill and detailed info on participants.

The action may be over, but the show goes on. Kara Hearn is editing a video documentary of the entire process that will be screened this fall. Date and location TBD, so please stay tuned.

Unnamed Broadway Musical: The Musical! is part of EFA Project Space's Artist-Organizer series. Interdisciplinary video artist Kara Hearn brought together an expert creative team to mount a barebones production using a particular orphan-themed Broadway musical (we were advised not to name) as its point of departure. Inspired by the experience of watching or listening to orphan-themed musicals as a child and projecting oneself into the starring role, the project was designed to serve a group of adults who never had the chance to fulfill this dream on stage. The casting of each part was based more on the willingness and need of the performers than on singing, dancing ability, or appearance.

This week for UBMTM

With Chris Berg away for the week, week two has been big on choreography and discussions about the "problematic concept of 'the grateful orphan,'" as well as each cast member's character development. Come see what happens at tonight's rehearsal from 6-10pm and be a part of the Unnamed Broadway Musical experience!
