The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Announces New EFA Studio Program Director
September 7, 2010 The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts is pleased to welcome William Carroll as Director of the EFA Studio Program.
Involved with the New York art world for more than 25 years, Bill was with the Dia Art Foundation when still under the Directorship of founder Heiner Friedrich. Next, at The Brooklyn Museum he assisted Charlotta Kotik, their first Curator of Contemporary Art. In 1987 he joined the Charles Cowles Gallery and was Director until 1996. Bill became Director of the Elizabeth Harris Gallery in 1997, working with Elizabeth to re-locate the gallery to Chelsea and to expand and diversify the program. In addition to providing support for contemporary painting, the gallery also established a project space that specialized in site-specific installations.
Mr. Carroll has curated numerous exhibitions that included artists Mary Heilmann, Jacqueline Humphries, Alex Katz, Jonathan Lasker, Ken Price, Chris Martin, Marilyn Minter, Philip Taaffe, Juan Usle’, and Sue Williams, among others.
Bill received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 1973, and his MFA from Queens College in 2007. After completing his MFA, he taught a Professional Practices course to MFA students at Parsons. During this time he also consulted for private collectors and worked as the Grants Administrator for the Nancy Graves Foundation.
He has lectured for the New York Foundation for the Arts, and at Bard College, Cranbrook Academy of Art, F.I.T., New York University, Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts. Recently he exhibited his own paintings and was reviewed in Art in America.
Francine Affourtit, previously the Director of the EFA Studio Program will continue part-time with the foundation as Director of Program Development.
Bill Carroll assumed the full-time responsibilities as Program Director as of the first of September.
