LIVE TRANSMISSION drawings track, in real time, the vital movement of living beings, transcending both figuration and abstraction, executing a direct neural translation from one human action into another. Drawing methodically with multiple razor-sharp pencils and both hands, as time-based performance, I condense movement into accumulations of graphite line which combine the controlled refinement of classical drawing with the unbound sensuality of spontaneous gesture. Time-space coordinates for each drawing are described with precision in the titles. Vitality is carefully observed through human activity. LIVE TRANSMISSIONS communicate beyond the specificity of language.
The theoretical base for the work is the transmission of observed vital energy to visual form. In 2011, over 3000 LIVE TRANSMISSION drawings have been done both publicly and privately on five continents. A database of the drawings will soon make them available for research.
FORM AND CONTENT, a series of ink drawings on paper, evolves from the graphite drawings in the LIVE TRANSMISSION series. Whereas the LIVE TRANSMISSIONS are done in real time by observing and recording a life activity in the field, the FORM AND CONTENT series evolves as studio research. Some of these forms become SITE-SPECIFIC WALL DRAWINGS, chosen for concept as well as physical scale and proportion for a specific situation. They are painted with flat black acrylic paint on white walls. Working with the vibrating and shifting energy of a projector, I paint the spaces between the lines rather than the lines themselves for maximum vitality in the wall drawing.
